Bank House, Cardiff Street
This is the HSBC Bank in Cardiff Street, but we knew it as the Midland Bank.
Next to it is the site of the National School which provided the school with
large numbers of boys. This building now houses retail outlets and an Indian
restaurant. What was The National School has been relocated to the buildings
vacated by the old Mardy House secondary school.
Beyond the junction with Cross Street, but not in the picture, is a new
Housing Association building that has completely replaced the
Coop
Food Hall. In turn, the Coop Food Hall, built in 1961, was on the
site of the Aberdare Cinema. In the town centre, there were three cinemas
at this time,
The
Aberdare Cinema,
The
Rex, and
The
Palladium. (These links are to the Rhondda-Cynon-Taf Photographic
