ABGS Reunion: Golf Day & Dinner, July 31st, 2015

Richard Evans
Tournament & Dinner Organiser
Unlike last year, the weather for the golf tournament was superb; warm and sunny but with a slight breeze to challenge the players when teeing off.
Later in the evening the players were joined by many more past students who met together in the bar before the dinner commenced. The event was organised by Richard Evans, son of long-serving teacher of geography, the late Mr Tom Evans.
A toast to the school and absent friends was proposed by Brian Morgan. He mentioned especially Philip Walters who had died some weeks previously, and who had been a stalwart of the Past Students Association for decades past.
Mark Davies, (ABGS 1972-80) Chief Executive Officer of Pro Rugby Wales spoke next and gave us his views on the Welsh game, its organisation and future. At the end of his talk he introduced the guest speaker for the evening.
The guest speaker was international rugby referee Nigel Owens. He gave a highly entertaining speech which touched on his experiences as a referee, the organisation of the rugby in Wales, and his experiences whilst at school. We also heard several anecdotes about his travels throughout the rugby playing world which have resulted from his status as an international referee. His after dinner speech was much appreciated by those present.
There were two prizes for the golf tournament players: one for
those who were members of Aberdare Golf Club, and therefore would have
an advantage, and one for visitors. The former was won by Rod Smith, and
and the latter by Steve Young.
