Ezer Griffiths, 1888–1962

Dr Ezer Griffiths presented this studio portrait of himself to William Rees Williams. Mr Williams taught Ezer Griffiths science subjects at the Trecynon school. In 1926 Ezer was to become the first pupil to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS.

The portrait remained in school archives long after Mr Williams retired in 1939, and was rescued from the Cwmdare Rd school just before it closed. More information about Mr Williams can be found in the Headmasters section of this website.

Ezer Griffiths lived in Ann Street, Gadlys, and attended the nearby school 1901–06. After several years at U.C. Cardiff he transferred to the National Physical Laboratory in Middlesex where he stayed for the rest of his career.

The portrait is inscribed with the handwritten dedication, “To my friend & science master W.R. Williams, Ezer Griffiths.” The portrait was taken by Lafayette Ltd.

Further information about Ezer Griffiths and his work can be found in the Former Pupils section of this website.
