Euro MP Llew Smith chats to Aberdare students, January 1994

The Leader reported: The European Community became the topic of debate when Llew Smith, Euro MP for South East Wales, visited Aberdare Boys’ Comprehensive School to discuss the subject.

The visit formed part of an ongoing programme in which guest speakers are invited to speak to the sixth form students about European issues as part of the boys’ studies.

Mr Smith said he was one of the few Labour Party members to oppose the EC but accepted it as necessary.

He spoke of unemployment in the Cynon Valley and said the Community should play a bigger role in combating the problem.

Llewellyn Thomas Smith (born 1944) was Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South Wales East from 1984 to 1994, and at the 1992 general election he was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Blaenau Gwent. He stood down at the 2005 general election.
