DINNER TO HONOUR
RETIRING GRAMMAR SCHOOL
CARETAKER

THE Castle Hotel, Brecon, was the recent venue of a presentation dinner to Mr. David Jones, caretaker of the Aberdare Boys’ Grammar School for 36 years who recently retired.

The function formed a dual purpose—as well as honouring Mr. Jones it served as a re-union between former and present members of the teaching staff, including Mr. G.P. Ambrose, M.A., B.Litt., L.R.A.M., former headmaster and now Principal of Caerleon Training College.

The gathering numbered over 70, wives being included in the party, and its successful organisation was due to school secretary, Mrs. Jenny Williams, and Mr. D. Phelps, B.A.

Mr. Jones was presented with a cheque by Mr. P.E. Phillips, M.A., deputy head, and Mrs. Jones was handed a bouquet by Mrs. Warren, wife of the headmaster, Mr. J. Warren, B.A., M.Sc.

Those who paid tribute to Mr. Jones, included Mr. Warren, Mr. Ambrose who spoke on behalf of former headmasters, and Mr. J.T. Bowen, B.A., who spoke on behalf of the former members of the staff.

Among the many former teachers present was Mr. W.D. Towler, B.Sc., former physics master who travelled from Somerset with his wife, to honour Mr. Jones.

Mr. Jones, who now lives in Jenkin Street, Aberdare, was presented with a suit-case by the pupils of the school and with an umbrella by the non-teaching staff.
