National Youth Orchestra of Wales: Concerts 1962
from Alan Davies, Bridgend Boys’ GS
This page contains the programme of the concerts given by the
National Youth Orchestra of Wales in 1962.
They took place in Aberystwyth, Haverfordwest, the National Eisteddfod in Llanelli, Ystrad Mynach, Barry, Ebbw Vale
and Cardiff. There was also a recording for BBC Television.
In 1962 there were just three pupils from the Cynon Valley in the orchestra, the
French Horn player Terry Johns, and Roy Gillard violin — both from Hirwaun. Terry was in ABGS but Roy Gillard
attended Vaynor and Penderyn Comprehensive School as he lived on the Breconshire side of the River Cynon, the county
boundary in Hirwaun. Two years later in 1964, Roy was leader of the orchestra. In the oboe section is Rhian Samuel
from Abernant a pupil at the Girls’ Grammar.
Also in the oboe section is Delyth Pardoe whose father was a former pupil at our school,
and by 1961 was headmaster at Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen, Bethesda.
At one time before their marriage, Delyth’s mother and father taught in Ynyslwyd School in Blaengwawr.
The oboe section is also home to a boy who became a very successful composer and knight of the realm.
In the viola section is a boy who became a member of The Velvet Underground, and is still continuing
his career in
music. Another viola player is Alwyn Humphreys a television presenter and choral/orchestral conductor.
In the ’cello section there is a player named Gwilym Ambrose. Quite possibly the
son of the former headmaster of ABGS, Gwilym Prichard Ambrose, who by 1959 was in post as Principal at Caerleon
Training College.
