ANNUAL PRIZE DAY, 1925
AT ABERDARE GIRLS’ COUNTY SCHOOL.
The annual distribution of prizes and certificates to pupils at the Girls’ County School, Aberdare, took place yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon in the School Gymnasium, County Councillor W. M. Llewellyn, M.E., J.P., presided over the ceremony, and was supported by Miss M. S. Cook, M.A., headmistress; Mr. W. Charlton Cox, M.A., headmaster Boys’ County School, and Mrs. Cox; Mr T. Botting, B.Sc., Director of Education; County Councillors T. Marchant Harries and J. Llewellin Smith, Mrs. Llewellin Smith, Coun. (Mrs.) A. N. Jenkins, O.B.E., and Mrs. E. Griffiths (governors), and Principal A. H. Trow, Cardiff University, who had kindly consented to distribute the prizes. The Hall was packed with parents and friends.
Prior to the presentations, the Violin Class rendered with great effect “Two Bourrees” (Handel) and “The Shepherd’s Dance” (German). The school choir also distinguished itself in the rendering of “The Snow” (Elgar), and “Hark, hark, the lark” (Schubert), and later sang two Welsh folksongs, “Yr Ehedydd” and “Hen Aelwyd Cymru,” together with “Dickory, Dickory Dock,” a nursery rhyme.
In the course of his introductory remarks, the chairman complimented Miss Cook and the staff on the excellent record of the school. The governors viewed with pleasure the progress made during the past four years, and were fully alive to the discomfort occasioned by the lack of accommodation. They hoped, however, to remedy this very soon. He had read the report of the Headmistress with keen enjoyment, and the whole of the governors joined with him in congratulating Miss Cook, the staff, and scholars on the success achieved. He was pleased to introduce to them a distinguished visitor in the person of Principal A. H. Trow, and on behalf of the governors, he welcomed him to Aberdare. (Applause.)
The Headmistress then gave her report.
