Bowen, J. T. and Jones, T. J. Rhys (1960)
Teach Yourself Welsh
English Universities Press
Here is a book that I am almost certain we did not use; Teach Yourself Books go
against the idea of a school! It is co-written by the deputy head J.T. Bowen who retired
in the summer of 1958. “Jack” came from Carmarthenshire and he certainly
had the habit of singing the praises of that county frequently. I see his co-author
worked in Carmarthenshire too.
It is sad to note that by 1960 J. T. Bowen had died, giving him no more than two
years of retirement from his position at the school.
The page of acknowledgements shows that Long Tom (T.J. Evans, geography) was
involved in the preparation of the book. He prepared the map that is on page 165 that
shows the thirteen counties of Wales and their principal towns at that time, Siroedd
a Threfi Cymru: Môn, Caernarfon, Fflint, Dinbych, Meirionnydd, Trefaldwyn, Ceredigion,
Maesyfed, Penfro, Caerfyrddyn, Brycheiniog, Morgannwg and Mynwy.
