Before he entered the priesthood, Revd Canon Alan Meats, taught at Aberdare Boys Grammar School from January 1966 until December 1968, when he was accepted for ordination training. He eventually became the vicar of St. Fagan’s, Trecynon, in 1983.
Both Elizabeth, (née Mear), and Gerald are still closely associated with St. Fagan’s, Gerald having been the choirmaster there.
Alan Meats, who was raised in Pontypridd, is now retired and has written his second book entitled Valley Boy Goes West, Memoirs of a Parish Priest. He was at The Reference Section of Aberdare Library on Thursday, 23rd October, 2014 to sign copies of his book. The book covers the period when Canon Meats served in the Church in the valleys from the 1980s onwards.
It has a chapter devoted to his time as vicar of St. Fagan’s and details his move to the Llanelli area, his adopted town.
Alan’s first book, published at the end of 2012, was entitled Llanwynno - A Treasury of Memories: An Adaptation of the Writings of William Thomas, (“Glanffrwd”).
Alan appears in the October 1967 School Panoramic photograph which can be found on this website. He taught Welsh with some R.E. at the school.
