Aberdare Boys’ Grammar School

This is one of three mounted rugby first XV team photographs. We don’t know why they were produced in this form. Maybe they were intended for a display cabinet or noticeboard. The style of the mount and caption looks to be homemade, maybe a result of wartime economies.
The player in the back row, extreme left, is Alan James Ruscombe Excell, the elder son of the sports master, E.J. Excell.
The captain Peter Powell Roderick of Abernant left school to work at Cyanimid Products on the Hirwaun Industrial Estate. He died aged 67 in 1993 at Gosport, the town to which Cyanimid had relocated in the late 1950s.
