Aberdare Boys’ Comprehensive School - ex-pupil Dai Young in
a Wales XV in The National Stadium, Cardiff

Rugby U14 1990-91

This photo of the Wales XV with Dai Young in it was taken sometime in the late 1990s.The venue is The National Stadium, which predated the Millennium Stadium, on the same site and before the pitch was turned through 90°. They were playing England that day (half the scoreboard is visible). The date is almost certainly 15 March 1997 because Jonathan Humphreys is the captain. By 1999, work on the stadium was in progress and Wales played England at Wembley in 1999.

Dai is in the front row with headband; sitting to his left is Rob Howley, the scrum half and current, (2015), Wales Assistant Coach, who got his first cap in 1996. Also recognisable in the seated front row is Neil Jenkins with the red hair – he has none now – record Wales points scorer and currently Assistant Coach to the Wales Team.

If the detective work, from John Samuel, on the date of the match is correct then the team members were as follows.
Back Row left to right: Paul John, Garin Jenkins, Craig Quinnell, Jonathan Davies, Scott Quinnell, Mike Voyle, Gareth Llewellyn, Steve Williams, Kingsley Jones, Gareth Thomas, Dale Macintosh, Allan Bateman, Spencer John, Wayne Proctor;
Front Row from left to right: Nigel Davies, Simon Hill, Neil Jenkins, Christian Loader, Jonathan Humphries (capt.), David Young, Robert Howley.

The bad news is that result was Wales 13, England 34.

Further information about Dai Young's career can be found on Wikipedia and ESPN Sport

Many thanks to John Samuel for deducing the date of the match, and to Philip Rees for putting names to faces.
