T.R. James’ Class in 1939

Thomas Richard James, TR, and his class; he was known in Aberdare as a pianist and choral conductor. Sitting next to him, with the mortar board, is the headmaster W. Rees Williams who was about to retire.

T.R. James attended the school 1922–28 as a pupil, and as a staff member at ABGS 1937–57. T.R. was for many years senior mathematics master, and became Headmaster Brynmawr Grammar School in Jauary 1958. He attended U.C.W. Aberystwyth, 1928 to 1932 where he gained a first class degree in pure mathematics, as well as a teaching diploma. In 1952 he gained the LRAM qualification. He lived in Cwmbach all his life, and in Aberdare was best known as the conductor of the Cwmbach Male Choir, 1950–1958 and 1959–1981.
