Samuel Evans and his class; sitting next to him, with the mortar board, is the headmaster W. Rees Williams who was about to retire.
Samuel (Sam) Evans was appointed to the school in 1928 to teach chemistry. He was born in Pontarddulais in 1901 and, as a boy, he attended Llanelli County School, 1913–18, moving to UCW Aberystwyth where he graduated in chemistry in 1923 — obtaining his Teaching Certificate one year later. In 1932, whilst teaching at Aberdare, he gained his M.Sc.*
His first post was at Gadlys Central School where he taught from 1924–28. He was then appointed to Aberdare Boys’ County School where he stayed until 1943, when he was appointed headmaster at Narberth County School.
He married Jane Augusta Jones in 1930, and eventually settled in Elm Grove. He died in 1984.
* His thesis title: The paramethoxy cinnamic acids and their alpha bromo derivatives.
