The Welsh Joint Education Committee, was established in 1948. The first GCE examinations were sat in 1951, replacing the CWB School Certificate and Higher School Certificate examinations. These 1954 O-level results were headlined as School Certificate; a case of old habits die hard.

 

Notes

John Bowen was the son of the ABGS deputy headmaster J.T. Bowen. He became a lawyer and eventually became chairman of the Management Board, 1989–99, of the Cardiff law firm Morgan Cole.

J.R. Coulthurst, Colin Francis and Geraldine Anne Williams gained State Scholarships on the strengths of their A level grades

Keith Alun Rowlands became a Welsh rugby international. He has an entry in the Former Pupils section of this website.

Marilyn Buxton Davies and Gillian Mary Oxenham are now retired G.Ps.

John Frederick Escott became a long-serving P.E. and Games master at The Bishop’s School, Tupsley. Hereford.

Ralph Slater became a journalist and for a time worked at The Aberdare Leader.

Philip Morris Walters became H.M. Coroner for North Glamorgan. He has an entry in the Former Pupils section of this website.

Menna Lynne Davies as Mrs Menna Bird, taught at both ABGS and AGGS to substitute for teacher absence or vacancies. She also taught in the primary sector when required. Menna took her A-levels one year later in 1955, and was awarded a State Scholarship on the strength of her grades.

Mair Glannant Jones was the daughter of Rev. Glannant Jones. He was the longest serving minister at Saron (Welsh Independent) Chapel, Aberaman, serving there for 42 years from 1931 until 1973.
