Higher Certificate was roughly equivalent to GCE Advanced Level, and
School Certificate was taken at the age of 16, but to gain the certificate, it was necessary to gain passes in
a minimum number of subjects.
The Supplementary Certificate was usually taken after one year in the sixth form and was awarded in separate
subjects.

William Burgess Llewellyn, (1929–2017), attended the school from 1939 to 1947, and was Head Boy and Captain of the Rugby XV in his final year. Outside school, he was deputy organist at St. Elvan’s, and stepped in to play the larger Calfaria organ in the absence of their organist, Edgar de Lloyd. After school, Bill studied Classics at Cardiff University and Music at Oxford, where he was an Organ Scholar at Balliol College. He became a teacher at King’s College Junior School in Wimbledon in 1956, and remained there until his retirement in 1991. During his long career, he taught Latin and Music and was also a fine sportsman and many boys benefited from his rugby coaching. He finished his career as Second Master at the school.
John Oliver, (1927–1994), was brought up in Hirwaun and went off to U.C. Cardiff after school. He returned to the school in January 1957 to teach mathematics. In 1969 he left to become Head of Maths at Mountain Ash Comprehensive School. He died in Pembrokeshire.
William David Oxenham, (1927–2012), was the son of the High A. Oxenham, a heating engineer and master plumber located in Maes-y-Dre. His mother Olwen was the daughter of D. Rees Jones the proprietor of Café Mona. After school he went to Clare College, Cambridge. He spent much of his later life in Scotland.
Leslie Underhill, (1929–2003), was awarded a State Scholarship on the strength of his Higher Certificate results. After gaining a double first in Maths & Physics at Aberystwyth, he went to London University where gained his Ph.D. He became a Senior Scientific Officer at AWRE, Aldermaston. At the age of 28, in 1957, he was awarded a European Council Fellowship to carry out research at CERN in Geneva.

Aeron Davies became a teacher in Brecon.
D. Colin Davies - Colin transferred from the Gadlys Secondary School to ABGS in 1942 and left in 1948 with CWB Highers in Economics, History and Geography. He entered UCW Aberystwyth with an entrance scholarship, but in his first year there he sat the Oxford entrance examination and gained a place in St. Edmund Hall and transferred there to read Politics, Philosophy and Economics. Called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn, he practised, until his retirement in 2007, as a criminal lawyer in the Crown Court on the Wales and Chester Circuit. In 1962, he married Menna M. Roderick, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dilwyn Roderick, of Maen Gwyn, Penderyn. At this time he was also skipper of the ABGS Scout Troop.

David King Evans was the son of Ernest Evans, Coal merchant Park Lane Trecynon. He married Barbara Crooks (daughter of the manager of Aberdare Cables), who appears in the Girls’ School list.
Kenneth Franklyn, from Colliers Row Abernant, became a schoolteacher in north west London.
Peter French became a leading actor in the productions at the ‘Little Theatre,’ Gadlys.
Leonard James - was a very talented violinist from Cwmaman. At the age of 16 he became the first leader of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales in 1946. He later became a strings tutor in the Music Department at UCW Aberystwyth.
*Stuart Griffith John spent the whole of his career working at U.C.W. Aberystwyth.
*Malcolm Lloyd - county champion athlete at school and later to become an international marketing executive, specializing in industrial colour control.
Tudor Lewis ran Morgan’s Garage in Gloucester Street.
*D.R. Owen - became a clerk in Aberdare’s education office, and was renowned as a rugby guru.
Noël Thomas - later to become the last headmaster of the Grammar School. He has an entry in the Headmaster section of this website.
Owen Thomas was the brother of Sadie Thomas, (later Sadie Fussell).

*Brian Lendon Berry (great grandson of Aberdare’s famous Victorian photographer Joseph Lendon Berry) - later to become a chiropodist/podiatrist, and Senior Lecturer at Paddington College.
Colin Lawrence became conductor of Cwmbach Male Voice Choir and Headmaster of Caradog Junior School - he was the son of Councillor William Lawrence and brother of John Lawrence who played in the school cricket team.
Jean Buxton, of Llwydcoed spent most of her adult life in Bristol. As Jean John, she authored two books about Llwydcoed. One ‘Grey Trees’ was autobiographical, and the other, co-authored with her husband Russell, was entitled ‘Llwydcoed in Old Photographs.’
Rhiannon Davies, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. D.R. Davies of Llwydcoed, became a reporter on the ‘Aberdare Leader’- and later as Rhiannon Williams.
Margaret Joyce Griffiths married *Ronald Cooke and both taught in Bridgend.
Mair Jones - we think is the daughter of Rev Glannant Jones, and sister of Gwyn Hughes Jones (ABGS 1956–1963);
Louisa Mascherpa was the daughter of Paul Mascherpa, the café owner in Canon Street.
Eirlys Roberts became Eirlys Hatton, one time conductor of Ebenezer Choir, Trecynon.
Rhiannon Campbell married *Prof Brynley F. Roberts (ABCS 1941–48), former Librarian at the National Library of Wales.
Dilys Thomas was the daughter of D. Emlyn Thomas, M.P., and became sister-in-law of Charles Morris (ABCS 1927–33), and former Latin master (ABGS 1953–78).
Amongst these girls & boys are several who are pictured in the group photographs of the 1947 Eindhoven school trip to be found on this website.
In 2011, before the Aberdare Leader report with both Higher and School Certificate results became available to us, Malcolm Lloyd, (ABGS 1942–50), sent us the original Aberdare Leader cutting of the School Certificate results in which he appears. An image of this crinkled cutting is shown below.
