Higher Certificate was roughly equivalent
to GCE Advanced Level, and
School Certificate was taken at the age of 16, but to
gain the certificate, it was necessary to gain passes in a minimum number
of subjects.
The Supplementary Certificate was usually taken after
one year in the sixth form and was awarded in separate subjects.
Notes
David Rowland Davies, Alwyn Williams, Douglas G. James, Meirion Lewis & Robert Jones have entries in the Former Pupils section of this website.
David Charles Phelps, (1919–2007), became a teacher at his old school from 1956 to 1979. He was also a board member of the Aberdare and District Co-operative Society Ltd.
Elwyn P. Howells (1920–1999), was born in Robertstown, (Tresalem). His father Ben Howells was a deacon at Salem Congregational Chapel in the village. After Aberdare County School, Elwyn went on to study first at Coleg Trefeca and then at Brecon Congregational Memorial College before being ordained in the chapel at Dolwyddelan in north Wales in 1945. In 1949, he became minister at Seilo Congregational Chapel, Cwmgwrach; moving on to Seilo Chapel, Melincryddan, Neath in 1971. As well as being a minister, he was an accomplished bard and eisteddfodwr. He retired in 1995, dying four years later. He is buried in Aberdare.
Mattie Abraham was born in May 1919, and brought up at 38 Oxford Street in the Gadlys, the daughter of a colliery platelayer, Albert Abraham and his wife Elizabeth. She attended Aberdare County School for Girls leaving there in 1937 with a Miners’ Welfare Scholarship. She graduated with a First in mathematics from Bedford College, London and after gaining her Cert. Ed. in Cambridge began a career in secondary school teaching. She taught in many schools: King Edward VI Grammar School, Louth, Lincolnshire; Cardiff High School; Lampeter Secondary School; Llanelli Girls’ Grammar School; Brecon Boys’ Grammar School; the two Grammar Schools in Aberdare; and finally in Penarth. She died in 2001.
Joan Eves, (1920–1971), became Head
Girl at the Plasdraw school, and took a prominent part in the school’s
25th anniversary celebrations in 1938. In the summer of 1945, she married
(later Rev) Thomas Percival Clarke of Bridgend whom she met when they were
both students at U.C. Cardiff. Joan's husband lived to the age of 90, surviving
his wife by 35 years.
In 2005 the late Bob Jones from Abbotsford, B.C., Canada, sent us the page
of results shown below. At the time it was the only record of the 1937
results we had – boys only. The page might have come from the school
magazine, The Aberdarian, or the programme of the school’ Prize Day.
Bob is present, with 8 passes, in the School Certificate paragraph.
