The Central Welsh Board, CWB, set its first examinations in 1897, and awarded its first certificates in 1899.
Higher Certificate was roughly equivalent to GCE Advanced Level, and taken at an age of about 18 years.
School Certificate was taken at the age of 16, but to gain the certificate, passes in a minimum number of subjects were required.
The Supplementary Certificate was usually taken after one year in the sixth form and was awarded in separate subjects.

Notes

William Frederick Barling was one of the three sons of the well known colliery manager Gilbert Bailey Barling (1890–1969). W.F. (Fred) Barling, was at school 1929–35. He went to Birmingham University and for many years taught French, and latterly until his retirement was deputy head of The Haberdashers’ Ask’s Boys School, now situated in Elstree. He died in 1990.

Derlwyn Howard Edwards went to University College, London, where he studied mathematics. After the RAF he became a teacher, and eventually a headteacher in Sheffield at Owler Lane, which was later moved to Hinde House. There he had a reputation as an extreme disciplinarian. He and his wife had seven children.

Thomas James (Tom), Evans spent almost the whole of his career as Head of Geography at ABGS, 1948–79. He came to ABGS after spending two years teaching at Ardwyn Grammar School, in Aberystwyth, (where he had also been a student at the University College, 1936-40). During WW2 he served from 1941 in The South Wales Borderers, and saw active service in the Normandy (D-Day) landings, and in engagements in France, Belgium and Holland. He retired in 1979, and enjoyed an active retirement until his death in November 2011.

Ivor John Leng, (1917–1989), was brought up in Godreaman. After ABGS he went to U.C. Cardiff and became a teacher, initially in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire. He married Olwen Jones, a library assistant of Clive Street, Trecynon. In 1939 he was called up and joined HM Forces. After 6 years in the army he taught at a grammar school in Manchester and then, in 1955, he was appointed as a lecturer in the newly formed Department of Education at Bangor University. He completed a Ph.D. at Bangor in 1965, and arising from this research he wrote his book, “Children in the Library”, (University of Wales Press, 1968). He finished his career as Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Bangor. He had three children: a daughter who was a biochemist; Paul Hugh Leng, who became Professor of e-Learning at Liverpool University; and Gareth Leng formerly Professor of Experimental Physiology at the University of Edinburgh. When he retired Ivor Leng moved from north Wales to Merthyr Tydfil.
