School Certificate was taken at the age of 16, but to gain the certificate, passes in a minimum number of subjects were required.
The Supplementary Certificate was usually taken after one year in the sixth form and was awarded in separate subjects.

Cardiff in Latin, 1936, and French in 1937. His Diploma in Education was taken at the University of Reading. Prior to arriving as Latin master at Aberdare in January 1953, he had spent six years teaching at Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital School in Bristol. Derlwyn Howard Edwards went to University College, London, where he studied mathematics. After the RAF he became a teacher, and eventually a headteacher in Sheffield at Owler Lane, which was later moved to Hinde House. There he had a reputation as an extreme disciplinarian. He and his wife had seven children.

Thomas James (Tom), Evans spent almost the whole of his career as Head of Geography at ABGS, 1948–79. He came to ABGS after spending two years teaching at Ardwyn Grammar School, in Aberystwyth, (where he had also been a student at the University College, 1936–40). During WW2 he served from 1941 in The South Wales Borderers, and saw active service in the Normandy (D-Day) landings, and in engagements in France, Belgium and Holland. He retired in 1979, and enjoyed an active retirement until his death in November 2011.

He finished his career as Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Bangor. He had three children: a daughter who was a biochemist; Paul Hugh Leng, who became Professor of e-Learning at Liverpool University; and Gareth Leng formerly Professor of Experimental Physiology at the University of Edinburgh. When he retired Ivor Leng moved from north Wales to Merthyr Tydfil.
