The following week, on September 20th, The Aberdare Leader published two additional results.
CENTRAL WELSH BOARD.—In the C.W.B. results, two other names have come to hand, viz., Muriel Jane Thomas, 44 Llewelyn Street, Trecynon, passed in English, history, mathematics, botany and drawing. Doris May Thomas, King Street, Cwmdare, passed in English, geography, and hygiene.
The Central Welsh Board, CWB, set its first examinations in 1897, and awarded its first
certificates in 1899.
Higher Certificate was roughly equivalent to GCE Advanced Level, and taken at an age of about 18 years.
School Certificate was taken at the age of 16, but to gain the certificate, passes in a minimum number of
subjects were required.
The Supplementary Certificate was usually taken after one year in the sixth form and was awarded in separate
subjects.

Trevor Jenkins
1950
Trevor Jenkins, (1908–1977), attended U.C. Cardiff, after which he initially became a
teacher but in the early years of WW2 was appointed County Youth Organiser for Glamorgan. In the mid to late 1940s he was
appointed Deputy Director of Education for the county, then in 1963 he was appointed Director, a post he held until 1972. He
was guest speaker at the ABGS 1964 Certificate Ceremony at the Coliseum.
Trevor Jenkins was brought up in Cwmaman, and married Eileen F. Edmonds of Cardiff in 1935. The couple lived in Bridgend and
Cardiff.
R. C. Knight of Gorphwysfa, Richmond Terrace, Abernant, was the son of the dentist Frank Knight. Later in life
in 1958, as Dr. R.C. Knight, senior principal scientific officer in the MoD, he was awarded the OBE for his services in the
scientific field.
Benjamin Samuel became a teacher in Liverpool and his family followed him there when Blaennant colliery closed in 1928/29.
R.N. Berry, (1906–1952), left school with a County Exhibition for Kings College London to study engineering. He lived in Surrey and worked for the Central Electricity Generating Board. He married Muriel Marshall in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, in 1934.
Richard was the son of AUDC Coun. Richard Lewis Berry, and grandson of the Victorian photographer J. Lendon Berry.
Philip Jones gained a Glamorgan Science & Mathematics Scholarship of £60 per annum, and went to U.C. Cardiff.
Victor Wyn Jones went to U.C. Cardiff. He was the older brother of Trefor Jones, who has an entry in the Former Pupils section of this website.
T.H. Kelly, (1907–1999), spent most of his professional life in South Africa as a professor of economics, and a university administrator. In a second phase of his life, he relocated to Canada where he took an academic post in Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He has an entry in the Former Pupils section of this website.
David Lewis, of the Crown Hotel, Aberdare, left for UCW Aberystwyth, with a Rees Llewellyn Scholarship of £35 per annum.
Florence G. Rees, (1906–1994), was notably the first Welsh woman to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS. A building at Aberystwyth University has been named in her honour. In Aberdare, she lived in Elm Grove. She has an entry in the Former Pupils section of the AGGS part of this website. Her obituary appeared in The Independent.
Marjorie Sturdy was the daughter of William Henstone Sturdy, the first librarian of the Public Library in Aberdare. When Marjorie’s father died, her mother Edith was appointed in her father’s place.
Margaret C. Cox was the daughter of the school’s headmaster W. Charlton Cox. Like her three brothers she qualified in medicine.
