The panoramic school photograph of our neighbouring grammar school.
In the background of the first and second sections is Dyffryn House, which was the home of the school from 1926. The first location of Mountain Ash County School was at Gwernifor, Miskin. It opened there as a mixed school in 1907.

The third staff member from the left, wearing a lapel broach, is Gweno Lewis, (1913–2026).
She was the widow of Alun Lewis, the poet and writer from Cwmaman.

The headmaster at this time was Mr. Idris Jones, M.A. He was a former pupil of Aberdare Boys’ County School, attending there 1912–1917. He was brought up in Penderyn, where his father was a quarryman. |

Henry (Harry) John Miles, of the Heathcock Inn, High Street, Aberdare, and later of Herbert Street, became a Maths master at Mountain Ash G.S. He was at the Boys’ County School in Trecynon from 1921 to 1928, before leaving for UCW Aberystwyth. He died at the age of 60 in 1969. |
Gweno Lewis was, at the time when this photograph was taken, the widow of the Cwmaman writer and poet Alun Lewis. Gweno was at the school for 36 years, teaching German later becoming senior mistress. There is an obituary for her in the website of the Cynon Valley History Society. She died aged 102 in 2016. |
