† Thomas Edward Roberts, (Royal Artillery), was a WW2 casualty. He died aged 35 on November 21st 1944, and was buried in Mook War Cemetery, Limburg, Netherlands.

All the boys in the list above started school in the autumn of 1920 except for Cyril Leslie Carden, Thomas Moles Williams, John Glyde Coleman, Edward Jones, Leslie Aubrey Sillitor, Samuel Watts, Thomas Eurfyl Rees, David Gwynfil Jenkins, Richard John Jones and William James Lanyon who arrived in the spring term or summer term of 1920.

There may be an error in the school records which indicate that a 15-year-old Thomas Moles Williams, (1904–71), was placed on entry in Form 1C. Whatever happened, the records also show that he left school nineteen months later from Form 5 in April 1922 to become a bus conductor.

Notes

Samuel Watts

Samuel Watts

Samuel Watts

Sam Watts, (1907–1993), was brought up in David St, Trecynon. He became Headteacher of Hirwaun Boys’ School (after Walter Twiny and before Elfed Davies). He married Catherine Ellen Jones in 1955, who later taught biology at Aberdare Girls’ Grammar School. Sam Watts was a Labour Councillor for AUDC Gadlys Ward; he was also for many years the conductor of the Ebeneser Choral Society; succeeded by Eirlys Hatton when he retired to Llandybie.

Samuel Watts

Trevor Jenkins

Trevor Jenkins, (1908–1977), was brought up in Cwmaman, and on leaving ABGS attended U.C. Cardiff, after which he initially became a teacher but in the early years of WW2 he was appointed County Youth Organiser for Glamorgan. In the mid to late 1940s he was appointed Deputy Director of Education for the county, then in 1963 he was appointed Director, a post he held until 1972. He was guest speaker at the ABGS 1964 Certificate Ceremony at the Coliseum.

He was a pupil at Park Elementary School, Trecynon and the Higher Standard School, Gadlys, living at this time at 53 Broniestyn Terrace. After ABGS he went to UCW Aberystwyth where he graduated LL.B., (1929). During WW2 he was in the RAF, where he attained the rank of Squadron Leader. He was demobilised in 1945.
There is an entry for him in the Former Pupils section of this website.
