William Edwyn Isaac

W.E. Isaac, before
he emigrated

William Edwyn Isaac, (1905–95).

W.E. Isaac attended the Town Council elementary school, (now Caradog Junior), and spent just two years at the County School leaving after Form 4 with no qualifications, intending to train as a pharmacist. However, after returning to education he gained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from the university in Cardiff. Then after a period at Birmingham University, he emigrated to South Africa in 1933, and was eventually appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Cape Town. He married there in 1936.

He and his wife found the apartheid regime in South Africa to be unacceptable, and consequently they moved to Kenya in 1961, where William became Head of the Department of Botany at Nairobi University College, (now the University of Nairobi). Professor Isaac and his wife, Frances Margaret Leighton, had twin boys and a daughter; both boys became professors. He retired in 1970 to Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne, Australia, where died in 1995.

Brynar Rees, (1905–97), was the grandson of John Rees of Ty’r Heol in Cardiff Road, Aberaman. John Rees, together with David Thomas, set up the Cwmbach Co-operative Society. The Cwmbach co-operative has been seen as the first instance of lasting co-operation in Wales.

Edward Stanley Jenkins, (1908–90), was born in 1908, and attended the Town Council School in Foundry Town. His family lived in Herbert Street and his father was a stationmaster at one of the town’s railway stations. E.S. Jenkins was at The County School from 1919 until 1926. He went to U.C Cardiff after gaining his School and Higher Certificates.
He became Senior Modern Languages Master at Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School for Boys. He was also Chief Examiner in French for the Welsh Joint Education Committee, and a former pupil of Mr. J.T. Bowen, a master at ABGS from 1918 to 1958. Indeed Mr Bowen acknowledged Edward Jenkins’ help when he wrote his Teach Yourself Welsh book in 1960.
E.S. Jenkins died in 1990 at Tunbridge Wells in Kent.

R.C. Knight, (1908–79), of Gorphwysfa, Richmond Terrace, Abernant, was the son of the dentist Frank Knight.
Later in life in 1958, as Dr. R.C. Knight, senior principal scientific officer in the MoD, he was awarded the OBE for his services in the scientific field.
