Notes

Spring term entry: The pupils H.C. Oxenham to Caleb Ewart Thomas enrolled during the Spring or Summer terms of 1909. All the others enrolled in the Autumn term.

Age on Entry: Pupils entering Form 1 were aged 12+ in the early days of the school. There was no Form 2 and the four-year course to School Certificate concluded in Form 5.
In 1909, the school recruited pupils to higher Forms, as well as to Form 1, so for example, Sarah Garrett would have entered directly into a higher Form.
The order of pupils in the table is the order in which they enrolled.

*Hirwain — as written in the records of this period.

Herbert Charles Oxenham was one of five Oxenhams who came to the school in the early years. Two of these were his brothers, and two his cousins. The father of the three boys kept a well known heating and plumbing business in Maesydre. Herbert won a County Commercial Exhibition and proceeded to The University of Birmingham.

Gwenfil Rees was the granddaughter of John Rees of Ty’r Heol in Cardiff Road, Aberaman. John Rees, together with David Thomas, set up the Cwmbach Co-operative Society as a result of a meeting in October 1859. The store in Bridge Street, Cwmbach opened on 8 March 1860. Most scholars recognise The Cwmbach Co-operative Society as the first established Co-operative Society in Wales. Ty’r Heol is an imposing detached house that stands at a fork in the road where Ynys-lwyd Road branches off from Cardiff Road. In its front garden is a distinctive Monkey Puzzle tree. In May 1910 at Saron Hall, Aberaman, Gwenfil’s father Oakley Rees was elected as ward secretary of Aberdare Valley Liberal Association for Blaengwawr. In July of the same year he was elected to be a director of the Cwmbach Co-operative Society representing Aberaman.

Penrhyn Charles Francis, lived in Dean St, Maes-y-Dre. He became the master tailor and outfitter known as Pen Francis, with premises on the corner of High St and Seymour St opposite St John’s Church. The Health Centre now occupies this plot.

Bernard Guy Runge became a science teacher at the Gadlys School. His father was Bernhard Runge, the watchmaker and jeweller of Cardiff Street.

Idwal Rees Davies is believed to be the father of David Daniel Davies who from 1950 became head of biology at the school.

David Sidney Nicholas known as Dai Nicholas (1897–1982) of Meirion Street, Trecynon, attended the school from 1909 until 1914, and was a student teacher in his final year. In 1912 he was capped by Wales at schoolboy level. He served in the Royal Navy in World War 1 and then, from 1920 until 1930, he was a professional footballer making 52, 56 and 166 appearances for Merthyr Town, Stoke City and Swansea Town respectively. After his playing days, he trained to be a teacher at Carmarthen, and eventually became Head teacher of Cwmaman Junior School where he stayed until his retirement.

Edith Veronica Tay was from Abernant. After her career as a school teacher, she married Albert Hobbs in 1943. Her School Prize of 1911 can be seen in the Memories & Memorabilia section of this website. Vera had an elder sister Minnie who was very active in the Past Students Association. Her brother Frank was assistant librarian at Aberdare’s first Public Library..
