Notes

Age on Entry Pupils entering Form 1 were aged 12+ in the early days of the school. There was no Form 2 and the four-year course to School Certificate concluded in Form 5.
In 1902 the school recruited pupils to higher Forms, as well as to Form 1, so for example, Mary Ann Davies would have entered directly into a higher Form.

Most of the 1902 entry had left the school by 1904 or 1905, which was quite typical of the school retention record for pupils at that time.

Not all the pupils in this list started at the school in September 1902. The first 24 pupils, from Annie James to Annie Jane James inclusive arrived in the spring or summer terms of 1902. The next 58 started in September, and the remaining three later in the autumn term.

*Hirwain — as written in the records of this period.

Lucy Anna Wilcox was the daughter of William Wilcox a master printer and bookbinder of Aberdare. When Wilcox retired he sold the business to Stephens & George, which still exists today, (2023).

Lena Beasley James became the mother of Tom Evans, (Geography teacher at ABGS - 'Long Tom')

Nellie Myfanwy Sinnett & Gilbert Lloyd Sinnett Jones were children of Rev James Sinnett Jones. Gilbert was unusually young to be admitted to a secondary school when he was not yet ten years of age. In 1911, Gilbert was still in school, but by then he had transferred to Llandovery College. In WW1 he joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and achieved the rank of Captain. However he died in April 1916 and lies buried in Basra Cemetery, in present-day Iraq. His father had transferred to Caerwys in Flintshire at the time of his son’s death.

Taliesin Millar was the son of William Millar, an estate agent with the Nixon’s Company, a member of Mountain Ash Council, WW1 Tribunal, and Mountain Ash Education Committee.

Ellen Jane Coates Ellen’s address of Park Hospital, Aberdare indicates she lived in the caretaker’s accommodation of what was called the Infectious Diseases or Isolation Hospital. This was situated at the top of Park Lane and below Broncynon Terrace.

William Noel Morgan was the son of Morgan Morgan. The family served as agents for Lord Aberdare for three generations.

Louis Bracchi Louis, (possibly Luigi), was a son of Giacomo Bracchi who was one of the well known Italian café proprietors. There were seventeen Italians living at the two addresses, amongst them were the Carpaninis, Rabaiotis, Fulgonis and Spinetis.

May George was a daughter of the well known Aberdare undertaker F.D.E. George.
