Notes
Age on Entry Pupils entering Form 1 were aged 12+ in
the early days of the school. There was no Form 2 and the four-year course to School
Certificate concluded in Form 5.
In 1901 the school recruited pupils to higher Forms, as well as to Form 1, so for example,
Maggie Davies of Dowlais would have entered directly into a higher Form.
Capcoch is the area which is now called Abercwmboi
The father of Eva Dix was Thomas Dix a Cab Proprietor & Publican.
Thomas John Dumayne was the son of a policeman. He survived WW1 having served in the Somerset Light Infantry. He died in 1946 in Bournemouth.
Tom Rhys was the son of Dr. W. Llewellyn Rhys, a surgeon. As a 2nd Lieutenant, Tom was killed in 1917 in northern France. His brother also fought in the war and was gassed. It was suggested that consequential stress might have contributed to the death of the boys’ father, Dr Rhys. His death occurred on the railway line between Monk Street and Cwm Farm. [Aberdare Leader, 6th July 1918, page 2.]
Edith Hopper was the aunt of the artist Stacey Hopper, whose biographical details are in the Former Pupils section of this website.
Annie Howell was a daughter of John Howell, an auctioneer, of Greenhill House, Aberaman. Greenhill House stood at in a field sandwiched between Brook Street, Aberaman, and the Dare-Aman branch railway line. Greenhill was the home of John Howell, his wife Mary Ann (née Davies) and their 10 children, plus 3 servants. Both husband and wife were Aberaman born and bred. A former pupil of the National Schools in Cardiff Street, John Howell began his working life as a boy collier in the mines, where he stayed for 10 years, before embarking on a varied career that included a few years as a clerk at the Abernant Works under Richard Fothergill. In the 1891 census the Howell family were at the Lamb and Flag, Cardiff Road, but later as a butcher, in Lewis Street, and finally as an auctioneer. He evidently moved up in the world and was in Greenhill House in the 1901 and 1911 census returns. He was High Constable in 1900, and was for many years a local councillor for the Blaengwawr Ward. He died in 1919 in his 73rd year.
Jennie Jacobs was the daughter of Morris Jacobs the pawnbroker, and later draper and clothier. The shop traded under the name Morris Jacobs into the 1970s. It was situated on the corner of Cardiff St & Merchant St.
Alfred Percival Morgan was the son of Morgan Morgan. The family served as agents for Lord Aberdare for three generations.
Ezer Griffiths* became a distinguished scientist, working in the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society, (FRS).
Ira Dar Griffiths was the daughter of the well known headmaster of Park School/Ysgol Y Comin. Her parents were John Griffiths and Esther (née Owen), both from west Wales. Ira made her home in Broniestyn Terrace as Mrs Woodroffe.
David Owen Roberts* became the headmaster of the Gadlys Central School. He married his classmate Nancy Edwards, see below. The couple had two children, one of whom was David (‘Dafydd’) Gethin Edwards Roberts, a local dentist.
Nancy Edwards was brought up in the Post Office in Cwmdare. She married D.O. Roberts, who later became headmaster at Gadlys Central School. Her son was David (‘Dafydd’) Roberts a well known local dentist.
Edith Rachel Howells was the second daughter of the farmer and landowner Edward Howells of Maesgwyn, a farm on the right as one ascended Cwmdare Road. The family was known as ‘Howells of Maesgwyn’. Miss Howells trained as a teacher in Swansea Training College, and subsequently taught for 39 years before retiring in 1950. At the time of her retirement, she was headmistress at Abercwmboi Infants School, where she had been for 11 years. She lived with her sisters in Broniestyn House, Trecynon. Mary (‘Mari’) Howells the school’s peripatetic strings teacher was a close relative.
Stanley John Millar was the second son of William Millar, an estate agent with the Nixon’s Company, a member of Mountain Ash Council, WW1 Tribunal, and Mountain Ash Education Committee. Stanley became a trainee draughtsman in the mining industry, and in WW1 was employed in that capacity at Wellingborough Munitions Works.
