Notes

Age on Entry Pupils entering Form 1 were aged 12+ in the early days of the school. There was no Form 2 and the four-year course to School Certificate concluded in Form 5.
In 1900 the school recruited pupils to higher Forms, as well as to Form 1, so for example, Philip Jones would have entered directly into a higher Form.

Arthur Wynne Thomas of Tyn Morris Farm, Cwmdare, almost certainly lived in Tir Morris, Cwmdare, a building situated on the Dare valley floor between Nantmelyn and Bwllfa collieries. The farm was named after the Morris family but the last of the Morrises left in the 1790s.

David Roderick of Ashbrook House, Clifton Street, was a son of the Aberdare architect Thomas Roderick who designed several of Aberdare's significant buildings.

Ivy Lea was the daughter of jeweller Alfred Lea. A jeweller in Commercial Street still trades under this name.

Ethel Violet Williams lived in the Constitutional Club on the corner of High Street and Canon Street. Her parents acted as the stewards of the club that had been recently opened at the above location in 1894. The club fist opened in 1884 and occupied two different premises before moving to its current location.

Amongst the parental occupations of the 1900 intake, there were:
Colliery Managers 2; Mechanical Engineer; Baptist Minister; Architect; Grocer; Contractors 2; Butchers 4; Colliers 20; Innkeeper; Timberman; Tailor; Attendance Officer; Weaver; Fitter; Platelayer; Foreman Platelayer; Sewing Machine Agent; Checkweigher; Tinplate Assorter; Masons 2; Jeweller; Stoker; Coal merchant; Sexton; Quarryman; Quarry Foreman; Sergeant of Police; Shop Managers 2; Winding Engineman; Furniture Dealers 2; Road Foreman; Schoolmaster; Inspector GWR; Shoemaker; Chemist; Hotel Proprietor; Firemen 2; Haulier; Farmers 6; Station Master; Steward; Gardener; ‘Professor’ of Music 1; Engineer; No occupation 5, of which 4 with no father.
