A quick look at the ages of the new pupils shows that an attempt was made to populate several different forms, rather than just Form 1. How successful this policy was is open to question, with what appears to be only two or three pupils in the sixth form.

Notes

May Daniel was the daughter of the colliery accountant David Daniel. In 1902, aged 19, she married Walter Charlton Cox, a master, and later, from 1905 until 1937, Headmaster of the school. From 1905, the couple lived in School House where they brought up three sons and a daughter. All four children became medical practitioners.

Elizabeth Evans’ father was a shepherd at Ysguborwen Farm.

Sarah Kate Evans was the daughter of the celebrated Baptist Minister Rev Benjamin Evans. He was the first clerk to the governors of the school, and he supervised administrative matters during the building phase of the school.

Taliesin Evans lived with his guardian the Henry Howard Evans who became the general manager of the Cambrian Combine. A portrait, dated 1892, of H.H. Evans hangs in the National Museum of Wales.

Gwen Garrett there is a photograph taken in 1897 in which Gwen appears.

Charles Howell was a son of Jenkin Howell, (1836–1902), the printer and writer, one of the most important literary figures in the locality.

Herbert Owen Griffiths and Mary Bronwen Griffiths were the children of John Griffiths the Headmaster of Park Schools, Ysgol y Comin, from 1882 to 1911.

The Heppell girls were daughters of Margaret (née Kirkness) and William John Heppell. Heppell was one of the best known colliery managers in south Wales. He was the last chairman of the Aberdare School Board, a body which ran all the council elementary schools in the town.

The Hughes boys of the Boot Hotel were the sons of Alderman David Hughes. Mr. Hughes was from Abernant and was initially a marine engineer. After returning to Aberdare he occupied several civic positions in Aberdare including election to the Merthyr Board of Guardians. His son E. J. Hughes, became a solicitor in Aberdare, and the other, William Hughes, a surveyor, in Pontypridd.

Anne Mary Tydian, Elizabeth Jane Olwen and Sarah Gwendolen Jones were all daughters of Anne (née Griffiths) and Rev Rees Jenkin Jones of Broniestyn House. Rees Jenkin Jones was minister at Hen Dŷ Cwrdd Unitarian Church, and was a most prominent member of the town in the later part of the nineteenth century. His wife Anne was a sister of Miss Jennie Griffiths who taught French at the school. The Griffiths were a well-established Aberdare family living in The Poplars, High Street.

Walter Powell Llewellyn was the only member of the large Llewellyn family of Bwllfa House to attend the school. His eldest brother became Sir D.R. Llewellyn, another brother W.M. Llewellyn lived in Ty Newydd, (now hotel), and his father was Rees Llewellyn after whom a school prize is extant.

The Miles boys were sons of the meat purveyor, and prominent Aberdare citizen, R.H. Miles.

John Howard Morgan was the son of the builder John Morgan of Monk Street. John Morgan was responsible for many buildings in Aberdare, and was involved in the construction of the streets that lie to south-east of Elizabeth Street, namely Glan-nant St up to Trevor St in Foundry Town.

William Llewellyn Morgan was the first pupil of the school to play rugby for Wales. His brother, who did not attend the school, was Dr Teddy Morgan; he was also a Welsh international. William represented Wales in 1910 against Scotland. He transferred to Christ College, Brecon where his brother also received his secondary education.

George Railton was a son of Thomas Railton who managed Powell Duffryn’s Aberaman Colliery.

John Silwyn & Stanley Harrison Thomas were the sons of Benjamin Thomas whose photographic portraits of Aberdarians are frequently seen on antique cabinet cards and postcards.

Elizabeth Jane Wilcox was a daughter of William Wilcox the well-known Aberdare printer. At this time the family lived in Cardiff St. When Wilcox retired, he sold the business to Stephens and George, a business that still exits, the S&G Group based now in Merthyr Tydfil.

As well as the above there were many children whose parents worked in the more traditional industrial occupations of the mining valleys. For example there were fourteen children of colliers, and five children of engine drivers. However, the children of shopkeepers, mine managers, teachers and ministers of religion were represented strongly in this first intake. In later years, the children entering the school from working class families formed a larger proportion of the intake.
