The Headmaster’s Plea to Retain the 3-year Phase-in Period for the
Introduction of Comprehensive Education
from School Records
Having just completed two months of the autumn term, September & October
1978, after comprehensive reorganisation had begun, it would appear that the
headmaster was under pressure to reduce the phase-in period of the reorganisation
from 3 years to one year. The report presented below clearly tells us that
the headmaster, school staff and parents were opposed to the truncated transition
period.
The plans for the school accommodation following reorganisation in
September 1978 were thwarted by a serious fire that took place at the Rhydywaun
School in Penywaun on January 7th, 1979. This school building performed a crucial
role in housing the new school across its two sites on Cwmdare Road and in Penywaun.
Little did the headmaster know when he wrote the following update on phasing-in that
a second fire was to occur on April 8th 1979 that caused further disruption to the School
and County accommodation plans.
