School Opening Notice
(Aberdare Leader, August 23rd, 1913)
The Head Master and Governors spent a considerable amount of time in the early days
of the school allocating scholarships, or part scholarships, to pupils. The notice shown
below is from the Aberdare Leader of August 23rd,
1913; it informs parents of the dates of the new term and details of the times
of the entrance examination.
The notice for the Girls’ Intermediate School would have been the first ever
placed, as the September 1913 intake marked the opening of the school. This would have
been the first time for the Head Mistress, Miss Cook, to carry out this procedure.

Notes
W. Charlton Cox had taken over from W. Jenkyn Thomas in 1905, but
1913 was to be his first year without an intake of new girls.
By December of 1913 two of the future heads of the Boys’ School
were already on the staff: William Rees Williams (Billy-2) and T.B. Reynolds.
Margaret S. Cook was just 35 when she was appointed as the first Head
Mistress of the school on
September 1st, 1913. She had been educated at
St. Andrews and Edinburgh universities.
The recruitment resulted in 46 girls on the school roll in 1913,
but by 1914 it had increased to 63.
Miss Cook remained at the school until April, 1942.
The similar wording of the notices is due to
Mr. J. D. Thomas being the Clerk to the Governors for both schools.
