Morien Waldo Parry Morgan (1916–1997) came from Ynysybwl near Pontypridd. He
served with The International Brigade in Spain but was imprisoned in a Franco gaol at
San Pedro for a period of 6 months. On his return to Wales in February 1939, he was greeted
enthusiastically by a large crowd at Mountain Ash Workman’s Hall. Morien graduated
B.A. from U.C. Cardiff in 1940. In 1945, he married Elaine Floyd of Hopkinstown, who
as Elaine Morgan later became the well-known playwright and author.
Morien spent most of his career teaching French at Pontypridd Boys’ Grammar School.
He remained politically active and in 1966 was Vice Chair of Aberdare Trades and Labour
Council.
